Digizoid ZO 2 Personal Subwoofer and Headphone Amplifier Review

In my quest for better quality audio, I ran into a couple of things. One was the Audio Technica ATH-M50s and the other was the digiZoid ZO2 Portable Headphone Amplifier. Unlike most headphone amps, the ZO offers a bit more. Not only does it power or drive headphones, it also lets users tweak the audio to their liking. A user can choose to add a bass boost or neutralize a track by lessening bass slightly or all the way. The main question though is whether or not its advertised features work well. Read on past the break to find out.

Features

The ZO can power headphones up to 250 ohms. So to translate, it can power most consumer-grade headphones. For an audiophile with $400+ equipment, I'd recommend looking elsewhere because the ZO will most likely not be able to cut it. However for those like myself who own headphones anywhere from $10-$300, the ZO will be just fine.

Now what exactly does the ZO do? Using digiZoid's integrated SmartVektr technology, the ZO is able to provide deep, powerful bass or a flatter response. It's all really up to the individual and his or her preference. But once having decided, you can use the toggle on the side to power on the device and commence tweaking. By default, the light bar will be at a orange-yellow color. This is going to power and add a moderate amount of bass. Now here comes the fun part. The ZO has 32 SST profiles or equalizer presets to choose from. This allows you to really fine tune your audio to your liking, something you don't see in any other amp.

- As you move the toggle upwards, the light will begin turning more and more red. The max red will give you maximum amount of bass the ZO can provide. At this level, tracks will sound incredibly bass-filled. This isn't a bad thing though. The bass given off by the ZO is not muddy or slow at all, but instead fast, crisp, smooth, and punchy. Any bass-head will fall in love with the ZO.

- And of course, for those looking to lessen the bass in their tracks, the ZO can do that as well. Just simply lower the toggle until you see a yellow to green light bar. I found that being at the max green would really flatten a track. Bass would usually not really be present at all, just the track.

Battery Life

Battery life was stellar. I could easily get around a full week of usage with the ZO. Or course, that was on moderate usage. For heavy users, the ZO would probably last a few days max. A good thing about the ZO, however, is that it doesn't take very long to charge it back up to full health. digiZoid says about 1 hour and I found that to be a pretty good estimate.

Modes

I've covered the sound-signature tuning mode, or equalizer mode, but if you press the toggle again, you enter configuration mode. Depending on your source, things will vary from here on. If you are connecting to the headphone jack port of a device(i.e. iPod or Smartphone headphone jack), you want to enter headphone out mode. If connected via a dock connector cable(Apple products), you want to use line out mode. To enter headphone out mode, move the toggle upwards while in configuration mode. You should see the light bar turn purple and if you hold for around 8 seconds, it will turn pink to indicate headphone out mode. In headphone out mode, volume is exponentially increased. Because of this, you want to set the volume of your source all the way down and bring it up as you listen with your headphones. As for line out mode, you instead control the volume with the ZO and not the source. For most people and their setups, headphone out mode will be the correct mode.

Some things to note

Though headphone out mode is recommended for most users, it has a few caveats. It uses a lot of power and puts the ZO to extreme work. Being in this mode will drain battery quicker than line out mode. I noticed that the high gain mode also produces some slight hiss and noise in the background. To remedy this issue, I entered line out mode instead thought not recommended. Not being in headphone out mode and using the ZO for volume adjustment provided cleaner audio. The way I see it, the configuration mode can be used as a volume adjustment for any source setup.

Conclusion

I am really fond of the ZO by digiZoid. Its offerings and performance more than satisfies the $99-$119.95 price tag. Overall, I was really pleased with the ZO and can highly recommend it to any consumer looking to invigorate his or her audio.
