The advertisement on the Televue site led me to believe that somehow this item was something more than a 4x Barlow and would somehow let more light in than the traditional models. In fact, it was just as dark as a standard 4x Barlow. My purpose was to use it to get up close on planetary nebula in order to get a finer grain and detail. The reduction in available light was so great that it defeated the purpose.

Unless you have a heck of an effective aperture and just get too much light anyway, use of a 4x increaser like this is just a source of frustration. The Powermate was well made and I have no issues at all with its ruggedness or either the craftsmanship or construction, it was just not a miracle worker.

- Note: I returned the 4x but immediately purchased a 2x to replace it. That item works like a charm and as advertised.
