Xantrex TrueCharge 2 - 40A - 3 Bank Review

This is an excellent charger, especially if you have more than one battery bank to charge. The compact size and universal power input are nice features. The pigtail AC connection is a bit awkward, but with a bit of work (I shortened the pigtail slightly) the pigtails and provided butt-crimp connectors fit in the space. (I think the pigtails instead of terminals are an artifact of the marine rating requirements.)

If you have battery banks of different chemistries (AGM, flooded, gel) you need the Xantrex XC-series chargers, which can handle three banks of different chemistries. The Truecharge2 series can only charge batteries of the same chemistry in all three banks.

The one drawback of this unit for me is if you are using it as a power supply for keeping a battery charged as well as supplying a load (a sort of double-conversion UPS), any load over about 2-3A will keep the fan from shutting off. This is unavoidable given the compact size of the charger, but is something to be aware of. Given that, its pretty hard to find a charger without a fan these days.

Note that there is no connection between AC earth/ground and the battery terminals, which allows you to establish your own positive or negative earth/ground, or implement an isolated earth ground if required.
