ACR Electronics SARLink 406 GPS PLB Review

I do a lot of hiking in the desert, particularly in the far back country of the Grand Canyon. I had a Spot Messenger, which I used on one Canyon hike. Spot uses a commercial satphone network, rather than the international SARSAT network, and my "I'm OK" messages didn't reach my wife. Needless to say, she freaked out and called the ranger station. They calmed her down, but they were none too happy with me when I checked in with the rangers at the conclusion of my hike. Apparently, Spot is notorious for not working under adverse conditions.

I learned my lesson with the Spot: Don't take half-measures, and don't take the cheap way out. I was tempted to buy the McMurdo beacon, which is smaller, lighter, and cheaper than the ACR SARLink. But the ACR SARLink gets the best reviews for signal strength and transmission time, so I am willing to pay more, and to carry a little more weight.

I haven't needed the beacon yet, and I hope I never do; but if I need it, I know I've got ther best unit available.
