Swarovski Optik DCB II Digiscoping Adapter for ATX/STX Spotting Scopes Review

This was bought to use with a Swarovski ATX scope. The adapter comes with a mounting collar that is intended to stay on the scope. The old eyepiece mounting ring is removed and a new ring and collar are installed. This is the same collar that comes with the APO digiscoping adapter. The two adapters interchangeably mount on the scope using this common protective collar. If you buy both adapters, you end up with two protective collars.

Once set up, the adapter slips on quickly and the camera swings out of the way for direct viewing. Photos are taken through the eyepiece. A relatively cheap looking carrying bag is included.

The photos are very good, with focus being a critical issue. By manually focusing the scope and letting the point-and-shoot camera do the fine tuning, the results are pretty good. Since the scope itself is a higher focal length, there is a tradeoff with shutter speed and ISO for non-stationary subjects. External flash can be helpful for close subjects.

Cameras should be relatively small to fit on the adapter. A SLR is too big, but my flat case, retractable lens P/S cameras fit just fine. My Nikon P510 is too large. A cable release would be great, but not always available on smallish cameras.

Summary....works well, easy to set up, and a bit pricey. But after all, if you can afford the scope, you can afford the adapter.
