Optoma PRO260X 3D-Capable DLP Multimedia Projector, 3000 Lumens, 3000:1 Contrast Ratio Review

We bought this projector to show movies and play video games outside at night. We live on a corner lot and our back deck faces the side of our neighbors house - which has cream siding and no windows - PERFECT. I was looking for a sub-$500 (budget) projector that would be "adaquet", since the fun is in the experience and not necessarily the on-screen detail.

In doing research, I saw that to watch a movie using this projector (and anything else in this price range), the distance should be around 25 feet from the "screen" (based on the projector estimator app) for a good picture and where I was planning on putting it - on a table on the deck- the distance is 35 feet. I was a bit concerned that it might be too far and would be a faint image.

The box arrived yesterday and when I got home from work, I decided to bite the bullet and see how it worked. It had rained, so I chose to test it from inside the house (through an open sliding glass door) and see how it looked, even though this was back another 18 feet from where I planned on using it. With great trepidation, I plugged it in and turned it on..... WOW. I was amazed at how BIG, BRIGHT, and CLEAR the image was. Any concerns I had about being able to see the image were gone. The whole family was amazed and is really pumped and excited to see how movies play on this beast. It has a case, lens cover, and remote (with batteries) - but the 3 features that stood out to me were: 1. 3K Lumens; 2. HDMI input; and 3. Audio Out (need it for HDMI sources).

I'll update this review after movie night this Friday with some more specifics on the picture quality and sound, but as of now...I'm extremely happy with the purchase.

UPDATE: OK, I couldn't wait until Friday, so last night I set up the rig and threw in a DVD. Note: I used an older DVD player (not Blu-Ray) that has an HDMI out and 1080 upconvert. Also, I hooked the Audio Out to an old BoomBox for some sound and fired it up (fingers crossed).

It was AMAZING. I wish I could find the words, but it exceeded all of my expectations. I'm not sure why someone would pay more than this for a projector, b/c the image quality (outdoors and projecting 35 feet away) was INCREDIBLE. I change the brightness to economy (std) mode and it still looked great. I could not be happier with the purchase and look forward to hooking up the XBox for some outdoor game playing.
