Product Description

Like all Explore Scientific eyepieces, the lens elements of the 100 eyepiece are meticulously cleaned and aligned before being installed in their precision machined lens barrels. Each lens and lens grouping have EMD (Enhanced Multilayer Deposition) Coatings and are edge-blackened to eliminate light scatter and maintain image contrast. Contrast is further enhanced with baffles that mask and deflect unwanted stray light. Each 100° Series Nitrogen-Purged Waterproof eyepiece is internally sealed and purged with inert, dry nitrogen gas to prevent internal fogging, to halt the intrusion of fine particulates and fungus, and to maximize the life of the internal coatings. To make sure, every 100° eyepiece is tested by submerging them down to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. Each and every Explore Scientific eyepiece is inspected both at the factory and again at their USA facility in California. Developing the new eyepieces Explore Scientific wanted to take a fresh perspective and address several points. The goal was to produce an ultra-wide angle design that providespride of ownership at a great value: Focus on Value - Explore Scientific invites direct comparison to any eyepieces on the market in their category. Protection from the Outdoors - By making the eyepiece body nitrogen-purged and waterproof eyepiece internal elements will remain as pristine as the day they were assembled. The sealed, dry environment is impervious to internal fogg

Explore Scientific Ultra-wide Angle 100 Series 20mm Eyepiece, 2.0" Barrel Review

I own both the 20mm and 14mm Explore Scientific 100 degree field of view (FOV) eyepieces and find them to be great performers. I have not yet compared them head to head against the comparable Ethos models yet (but will do so at a star party and update this review), but understand from other users that they are very close. I did test them head-to-head against Nagler 82 degree FOV eyepieces with an eye to replacing the Naglers, and found the that optical performance between the two brands was comparable in terms of light throughput, lack of false color, and pin cushioning. Since the 20mm Explore has virtually the same size field as a 26mm Nagler, but with higher contrast, magnification, and a smaller exit pupil (good for middle aged eyes, or use in light polluted skies), it was an easy decision to keep the Explore eyepiece.

Build quality and fit and finish are very good-- I especially like the undercut taper on the eyepiece barrel, which makes it easy to lock securely into a telescope focuser without the 'catching' that sometimes occurs with undercut ring used for that same purpose by Televue and others. I can't speak to the waterproof claim for the eyepiece (thank goodness!) but have no reason to doubt its validity. One caution-- these are large and heavy (2+ pound) eyepieces, so balance in a small telescope might be an issue.

Overall though, these provide virtually the same optical performance as 'the other' 100 degree field of view eyepieces at about half the price, and provide a large improvement in viewing area if compared to standard 'ultra wide' (82 degree) eyepieces.
