1U Four hot swap SATA Bay JBOD and HW RAID Enclosure with USB3.0 |eSATA interfaces MAC/Win/Linux Review

I bought these for D2D backup after trying another device from SANS Digital. This unit is very easy to setup and get up and running within minutes. I filled it with 4 x 4TB Seagate drives and set the selector to RAID5. Ran Atto benchmark and it averaged 200MBps. Turned it off and set the selector to RAID10 (actually you have to follow a special procedure in the 1 page "manual" to switch to Port Multiplier, reset, turn off, then set to RAID10) and ran Atto again. This time it got 210MBps. I was expecting a bit better, but still can't complain as this will be more than adequate for what I need. Since I'm running consumer drives without TLER, and because RAID5 is a sad joke, I intend to keep it RAID10.

I installed the RAID utility from their website (there is no cd in the box) and, while the GUI is a bit cartoonish, it conveys all the necessary information. Even has the capability to email in the event of an error.

My next test was to pull a disk and re-insert to test a RAID rebuild. The unit is advertised as hot-swap. So, I pulled the disk and the alarm started beeping as expected. I then re-inserted the disk and the alarm went off, but the the RAID utility didn't pick up the disk. There was no disk activity or light blinking. I turned the unit off, waited a minute then turned it back on. The RAID utility popped up with a Damaged Disk error. Uh Oh. . . I shut it down, pulled the disk and stuck it in a USB cradle to test and it was fine with no SMART errors logged. Using the selector switch, I broke the array, recreated it and retried the disk pull. This time, I shut the unit down to reinsert the disk. On reboot, the array saw the replaced disk and started a rebuild. 6 hours later, it was done. Basically, this is NOT a hot swap device, or if it is, its not reliable enough with this model disk to use it as such.

Overall, its a good device. For $400, you can't beat it. Supports the latest 4TB drives and offers pretty speedy performance. The downloadable utility is great and offers high end features. It's not too loud, but it's in a server room with other devices. Probably too loud for an office or your home.
