I bought a Tom Cat 255 boat with a Garmin 740 installed. The Coolest feature with a Garmin networked suite is that with a Garmin VHF 200 (but NOT VHF 100) + Garmin AIS 300 (class A) or Garmin AIS 600 (class B) you can touch the AIS target on the touchscreen plotter and direct dial the target bridge MMSI # . The Garmin AIS 300 is receive-only, the AIS 600 transmits your boat's info + receives others. For recreational cruisers, this is so much better than hailing 'the black and orange tug near SM 133' on VHF16. You see his name, SOG, direction, etc on the plotter when the AIS is networked to it...plus option to direct dial MMSI. I don't think any other marine electronics line offers this...a great idea that works in the real world on the boat. (Other suites you write down the MMSI from the plotter, program it into your VHF, and call it manually...takes 2 crew at cruise speeds). Again, the Garmin VHF 100 won't do this. It took me a lot of research to figure this out, hope to save you some time and quickly see the options in 100 words or less! Garmin has great info on building a 'plug and play' network. However, you do have to actually read the instructions and (gasp!) follow them to make it work.
