Sony Water housing Review

I've not seen any reviews for this particular waterproof housing, I got it not too long ago, so I thought I'd give it a review for those that were curious about it.

On the market there's a lot of waterproof camera/camcorder alternatives for consumers. Mainly because waterproof housing is very expensive, and unless you're a deep sea oceanographer chances are you don't get grants to buy a $4,000 deep sea waterproof camera housing.

So, enter Sonys Sports Pack designed for Handycam camcorders. It supports quite a few models, and this newer version of the Sports pack has Sonys newer HD camcorders in mind. But honestly if your camera has an A/VR port, it will work on almost any Handycam model. It also supports room for additional lenses and the larger sized batteries.

The camera(depending on what you have) is seated on a black mount which screws into the universal 1/4 screw hole. Once the camera is mounted is slides into a track inside the housing, and you connect a plug to the A/VR port. It also comes with an assortment of lens ring caps that screw into the from the lens of your camera so when you place your camera into the housing it protects the front of the camera from being damaged. From there you close the back of the housing and seal the camera in. Once you do, you can operate the entire camera from the buttons on top of the housing. It's also built with a stereo microphone for recording when the camera is laced inside the housing.

It's very easy to control and very efficient with the record button, W/T, a power button and a photo button and mode selection. It has a hand strap on the side and has a folding mirror LCD screen for viewing the camcorders LCD screen under water. The only weird thing beneath the hand strap is on the body where the hand placing goes is slotted. Obviously it for cutting through underwater without resistance from the camera. But you better have a pair of padded gloves or some dive gloves or else the hard plastic will cut into your hand and you'll have marks on your hand. But for this you don't really need to hold it by the hand strap, it functions fine just holding it with both hands.

The front lens of the housing is absolutely perfectly clear and at first when I got it out of the box I wasn't sure if the lens was missing because its so crystal clear. It's really engineered for HD cameras in mind underwater. In case you are wondering, it's rated for a depth of 17 feet(or 5 meters). It also has a rubber o-ring that you install on the back door of the camera on the inner part, this is what allows it to be waterproof. You have to lubricate with a packed in gel and put the ring into place and change it about after a year or so.

It also comes packed with anti-fogging inserts for the camera, and it doesn't hurt to have some silica gel packs in addition to keep the camera dry. When you have everything assembled and your camera housing ready its best to give it a water test by submerging it in a bathtub or run some water over the housing to make sure no moisture gets in or any water.

The other thing that's great about this housing is that it is weather proof as well and can function the same in the rain or snow. It's not meant for hot or humid temperatures as it may damage the housing and warp the front of the lens. Overall, if you're looking for a high quality housing that's dependable and reliable versus 3rd party housings and bags that are out there on the market. The Sony Sports Pack gives you versatility with your camera with the controls and the mirrored LCD screen which other packs just don't offer, as well as a way to have your camera safely secured and inside of a high quality finished product that will provide years and years of use. It may be expensive, but I have to say there's hardly anything out there that can compare to this, if at all.
